Message from our Superintendent Regarding School Security

December 18, 2012

Dear Parents,

The recent and tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut have led us to pause, pray, reflect and plan. I want to begin be reassuring you that our highest priority for your children at Cherry Hills Christian is that they are learning in a safe and secure environment.

For 28 years, we have seen God's blessing and protection upon our school. Over those years, our security plans have evolved and improved to include:

  • Locked doors
  • Electronic entry via staff only badges
  • Trained and watchful staff
  • Emergency preparedness plans and regular drills
  • Camera and monitors located throughout the building
  • Consultations with Douglas County Sheriff

During the past 30 hours, we have spent extensive time meeting together as a school management team along with church and school security committee members and even Douglas County Sheriff deputies talking about ways we can strengthen and improve our security.

We will continue to employ the things we already do, but we are also considering implementing some changes. You will notice some changes, but others will be behind the scenes and you won't notice those.

One noticeable addition is a more regular patrol by the Douglas County Sheriff at all Douglas County Schools, including ours. You may frequently see a squad car parked in front of the school. We tell you this so you won't think their presence means there is a problem.

A first line of defense against evil is prayer. We know you pray regularly for God to protect our school and we appreciate your prayers. In addition, we appreciate your watchfulness that can alert us to any vulnerable areas or concerns that may arise.

We hope that in the weeks ahead you will have a relaxing, stress-free Christmas break, celebrating the birth of Jesus with your family and friends.

In Him,

Robert Bignell
Superintendent
